Smoked meat is delicious, but not everyone feels like spending many hours around the smoker. For people like those, the propane smoker was made, among other things, which makes smoking much easier while maintaining great flavor.
A gas smoker is characterized by very easy temperature control and simple use. You don’t need to worry about getting the charcoal burning or adjusting air vents, all you need to do to maintain a fixed temperature is properly set the burner power.
Another advantage is capacity, most models available at a pretty low price can fit a whole lot of food.
In this guide I will show you several best propane smokers in my opinion, out of several dozen models available on the market.
For those completely unfamiliar with this type of smoker, I have also prepared several valuable tips that will let you learn a little more about gas smokers.
The 4 Best Propane Smokers Reviewed
Out of several dozen different options on the market, I was able to pick a few best gas smokers for you. I used many aspects and reviews as a reference, which allowed me to pick several different models, I invite you to make yourself familiar with all the reviews below.
One of the bigger models from Masterbuilt offers not only very large capacity but also useful features.
One burner is more than enough to maintain a stable temperature. Remember that it’s a smoker and not a grill, so a high temperature isn’t that important.
many guides offers as many as four chromed racks that serve their purpose on a surface of whole 1300 square inches.
Of course if for any reason you need a smaller model, it is an option. The manufacturer has a smaller gas smoker model in their offer, which will also allow you to save some money.
Personally, however, I prefer a bigger model and if you also really smoke a lot, there is no point thinking about something smaller.
The wood chip tray is located in the bottom part of the smoker right above the burner, it’s too bad this part doesn’t come with a separate door.
The smoker’s structure is solid and pretty well-built for this kind of money. It is also among the more durable models but in case of any problems you can expect support from the manufacturer or a large community.
An upside of Masterbuilt is recognition and popularity – it means you can expect many guides, spare parts in case of a malfunction and very interesting accessories.
Masterbuilt Black Propane Smoker 40 inch comes with all the essential features and gadgets that this type of smoker should have.
A little smaller than the previous suggestion, but available at a much lower price. Dyna-Glo 36” Vertical LP Gas Smoker comes with all the essential features for convenient smoking, in many regards it is actually better than Masterbuilt.
First and foremost, in case of this model you can also expect four racks, but the total cooking area is 784 square inches. The structure is pretty narrow so when you cook bigger quantities of food it will be necessary to cut things like ribs in half.
It gets huge thumbs up from me for the double door structure that has a lot of upsides. First and foremost, it separates the main chamber from the one where the burner and the smoker box are located. During smoking, it is enough to open the lower part to refill wood chips, that way you don’t suddenly lose heat in the main chamber.
There is only one burner as well, but it can handle this kind of area very well.
Of course it isn’t the top tier when it comes to quality, but that’s not what it is about. Dyna-Glo 36” Vertical propane smoker was made with great efficiency and the best possible quality at the lowest possible price in mind.Did they pull it off? I’d say they most certainly did and it’s also confirmed by numerous positive reviews from the owners of this model.
The next option is also targeted towards those with a limited budget but in this case you get much better quality of workmanship. Sadly, the size of Camp Chef Smoke Vault is so small that it’s only a suggestion for those who cook rarely or in small quantities.
What is certainly an upside, on the other hand, is the convenient price and much higher quality for that kind of money compared to most competitive models available on the market.
Another positive is the style, which in my view looks much better than the previous options although that’s not the most important thing.
What matters is the burner – there’s only one, but it’s more than enough in a model this small.
Also included are two racks and right underneath them a dripping tray, a wood chips tray and a burner right below.
It is much easier to use, it reaches the right temperature fast and there are no problems with maintaining it.
Generally speaking, Smoke Vault is great when it comes to smoking but personally I believe this size to be too small. I know there’s a lot of less demanding people but I recommend those more experienced to get a slightly bigger model, especially if you want to smoke ribs without cutting them in half.
Tips for buying a new propane smoker
Budget – There are no major differences in prices taking all the models available on the market into account. If you want to save as much money as possible, though, check out smaller and simpler models. They don’t have big areas or many gadgets, but they certainly make it possible to prepare great barbecue.
Size – Think about how much food you cook and for how many people, then pick the right size of a smoker for your needs. The most popular sizes are 30 and 40 inch but you can buy much smaller, mobile models or very large ones with decent capacities.
Availability of parts – You need to know that the original propane smoker is not perfect. There’s a lot of things that could be improved as well as many things that can break. What matters in such situations is availability of parts and different accessories. Look for models from the most popular manufacturers if you want to have an easy access to parts, accessories and guides.
Two door – It’s a slightly better solution as it divides the smoker into two parts, one of which is devoted to food while the other is the place where you can refill water or wood chips bowl. When smoking, temperature is important and easy to lose by opening the door where food is located. Such solution prevents this type of situations by making it possible to open the second area separately.
The pros and cons of buying propane smoker
Convenience / Set & Forget Style – That’s the greatest advantage of this smoker, it makes it possible to smoke easily and conveniently without much effort. The smoking process usually takes many hours, when it comes to charcoal smokers it requires a lot of attention and control whereas in case of propane smokers you don’t have such responsibilities. It is definitely a great option for those who don’t like traditional, time-consuming BBQ ( However, if you prefer to sit outside smoking all day, you should buy an offset smoker ).
Easy temperature control - It requires gaining experience and figuring out the smoker but after some time you will know what burner power to choose to achieve a specific fixed temperature. Either way, there are no major problems and it’s definitely easier than with a regular smoker.
Flavor – A gas smoker provides convenience just like an electric smoker does, but it beats it in terms of flavor. Plenty of people believe that a propane smoker offers a very good flavor, inferior to charcoal but still pretty decent.
Mobility – You rely on a propane tank which makes it possible to easily change your smoker’s location.
Requires controlling the propane tank – It’s not a smoker for people who forget, there’s no alarm to notify you about having to replace the tank, you have to monitor it on your own. Smoking takes many hours so it often turns out halfway through the process that you might need another tank. If you have a spare one at home then it’s no problem but if you forget about it, a sad drive to get a new one awaits you.
Durability and malfunctions – Sadly it is not the type of smoker that can boast the kind of durability like in other types of smokers (charcoal or even pellet smokers). Solidly built models should last for many seasons but most of the options available on the market are only an investment for a few years.
Warranty – It’s hard to find a manufacturer that will offer more than a year of warranty. Sadly, propane smokers are not among the best in terms of durability which shows in such short warranty period. The exception are very expensive models but in this guide I mostly describe the most popular inexpensive models for beginners.
