The 4 Best Gas and Charcoal Grills Reviewed

Having analyzed the entire market, I have to admit that in my view there are only several noteworthy options. Now it’s your move, check out the reviews and make your own choice on which of these combo grills will be the best in your situation.

Char-Broil Gas2Coal 3-Burner

The smallest hybrid grill out of all my suggestions.

At the first glance, it looks like a normal gas grill, but the difference is a slightly different design of its construction. It comes with a specially designed pan that makes it possible to cook on charcoal.

Char-Broil Gas2Coal is a great option for people with limited space and those who cook smaller quantities of food.

You can cook on charcoal or gas, but you have to choose either one, it is not possible to cook on both at the same time. That’s the main reason why this combo grill is much smaller than other options, it only has one cooking chamber.

I have mentioned that in this category of grills this is a small-sized model but in reality it has whole 420 square inches of the main cooking area.

Add to that three pretty strong burners and it turns out to be a pretty efficient grill.

If for any reason you want one small-sized grill that makes it possible to cook on charcoal and gas instead of two separate ones, it’s a great solution.

It has two side shelves that provide a lot of work space, one of which even has a hidden side burner.

Out of all the grills in this guide, only Char-Broil Gas2Coal stands out with a pretty compact size that doesn’t take that much space.

The downside for many people might be what I have mentioned several times before, you need to choose between charcoal and gas, you can’t cook on both.

Oklahoma Joe's Combo Grill

This grill offers more than just cooking on charcoal and gas. This three-in-one combo grill offers three gas burners, a charcoal grilling area and a separate offset firebox that is perfect for smoking.

Oklahoma Joe’s Combo Grill, on top of three different cooking areas, also offers a side burner.

It’s a very versatile option for those who cook a diverse range of food. When you have a grill like that, you can cook food in different ways using charcoal or gas. With two separate cooking chambers you can cook on gas and charcoal at the same time.

Each chamber comes with essential elements that make cooking convenient.

The two main chambers offer a total of 750 square inches of the main cooking area plus 310 square inches of cooking area in the firebox chamber.

It lacks working area a little when cooking, but there’s more than enough room to store things.

The grill has wheels in the base, but due to the very large size of the entire construction and weight, it is not easy to move it from one place to another.

What about quality? For that kind of money, I have to admit it looks very good. I think that in good hands it can last for quite a few seasons without major damage.

The problem with this type of grills is corrosion, but if you properly clean this grill from ash etc. and keep it sheltered (under roof) you can extend its lifetime significantly.

Char-Griller 5050 duo

For that kind of price, it is a pretty big combo grill with the gas chamber offering 438 square inches of the main cooking area, and for the charcoal chamber it is whole 580 square inches (total of 1018 square inches).

Char-Griller 5050 Duo is a versatile grill that offers a very large area to cook on charcoal and gas even at the same time.

The charcoal cooking chamber comes with many interesting solutions. The double bottom guarantees better insulation and conditions ensuring better efficiency. When cooking, all you have to do to easily refuel is use the included grate lift.

You can adjust the distance between the charcoal plate and the grates, deciding on precision and intensity of heat.

On top of that, right below the place with charcoal is also a special place where ash is collected. All you have to do is remove it after you’re done cooking and empty it, it’s a very effective and convenient solution.

The gas cooking chamber is simpler and smaller, but it has as many as three slightly weaker burners. Still, such number of burners is big for this kind of surface. Under the grill you’ll find a grease container and that’s pretty much everything you need.

Located next to it is the only side shelf, which normally serves as a work space when cooking. Hidden under the lid, however, is also a side burner, which comes in handy when heating sauces etc.

The whole thing looks pretty nice, two independent cooking chambers, very large cooking capacity and a lot of room to store things under the grill.

Unfortunately, I have to warn you that it’s not an investment for years to come.

Due to a pretty low price for the size of this grill, the manufacturer used materials of slightly poorer quality. It might result in corrosion appearing pretty early on, especially if you don’t take care of the grill.

4. Dyna-Glo Dual Fuel Grill

Dyna-Glo Dual Fuel

A very big, two-chamber combo grill that makes it possible to cook on charcoal and gas at the same time.

Effectiveness, efficiency and convenience of two grills combined in one.

Dyna-Glo Dual Fuel is a grill that sort of consists of two separate grills. It is divided into two parts that each of which works separately, which means that you can cook on gas and charcoal at the same time without any limitations.

The chambers are separate and come with separately designed systems as well as separate lids.

In total, you get 730 square inches of the main cooking area at your disposal.

In the section designed for gas cooking, you will find two pretty strong burners. On top of that, you can expect all the basic yet essential features and solutions such as a grease drainage system, work space and storage room under the grill.

In the section designed for charcoal cooking, you will find a completely different space. First and foremost, it stands out with a large charcoal basket that can also fit large pieces of wood.

A very nice solution is adjustable distance between the charcoal container and the grill grates. When cooking, you can move the charcoal container away when you decide that the temperature is too high.

Of course it also comes with air vents that are only present in the charcoal chamber. Everyone knows how important air flow control is when cooking on charcoal.

You are certainly not going to run out of work space when cooking thanks to two side shelves. You can also expect different types of hooks, built-in thermometers on both lids and wheels – all of that improves the cooking convenience.

I have to warn you though, that despite the wheels in the base, it isn’t that easy to move such large grill from one place to another.

Advantages of a combo grill

Instead of two separate grills, you have one where you can cook on gas or charcoal. Most models offer the option of cooking on both at the same time thanks to two separate zones.

Some of the cheaper models only offer one to choose from, charcoal or gas. When choosing charcoal, you can’t cook on gas at the same time and vice versa. If you want to cook on gas or charcoal at the same time, make sure if the grill has two separate cooking areas.

A single grill takes less space, and choosing between charcoal and gas is a great option.

Charcoal is characterized by great food’s flavor and integration with the grill throughout the entire cooking process. Sadly, the downside is a large amount of time you have to spend getting the charcoal burning and monitoring it.

Propane makes a great alternative as it makes very fast and convenient cooking possible. All you have to do is turn the burner knob and after about a dozen minutes you can start cooking. Temperature control is much simpler and so is the entire cooking process. You don’t have to remove ash, all you have to do is turn off the burner, clean the grill grates and that’s it.

These are the main reasons why people decide to buy a hybrid grill. There are more, but I focused on the most important ones.

Tips for buying gas and charcoal combination grill

It’s a pretty unusual grill, so besides the standard aspects, one has to pay attention to several other things, more on that below.

Size – Analyze the space for a new grill in your surroundings and think about how much you are going to cook. Compare both parameters and match with the grills I presented.

Features – Pay attention to the ash removal or grease drainage systems when it comes to cooking on gas. These are the basic features that every good grill should have. Then the second thing to look into are the features that enhance convenience. I’m talking about a place to store accessories, hooks, large side shelves, easy access to charcoal etc.

Two zones – You want to cook on charcoal and gas at the same time? In that case make sure if the grill you’re interested in has two separate chambers and allows them to be used at the same time. Some models only have a single chamber which means you have to choose between charcoal and gas.
